Report Description

The global biomethane market stood at around USD 7.0 billion in 2025. Most energy transitions require rebuilding, from pipes and engines to appliances and terminals. Biomethane is the exception, because upgraded biogas is chemically identical to fossil natural gas, it flows through the pipelines already in the ground, burns in the boilers already installed, and fuels the trucks already on the road. Swapping in this fuel instead of rebuilding around it is unusually cheap, which explains why policymakers have leaned on it so heavily.

The difficulty is scale. European biomethane capacity crossed 8 bcm per year in 2026 for the first time, yet the EU's REPowerEU target calls for 35 bcm by 2030, more than four times today's base and only four years away. So the biomethane market is technically proven and politically favoured, yet structurally behind.

This article looks at where the biomethane market creates value, what genuinely constrains it, and why that matters to gas utilities, industrial buyers, fleet operators, project developers, and the investors funding the build-out.

Why Biomethane Needs No New Infrastructure

The technical case for the biomethane market rests on basic chemistry. Raw biogas from anaerobic digestion is roughly 55% methane and 45% carbon dioxide; strip out the CO2 and trace impurities and what remains is more than 95% methane, the same molecule that fills Europe's gas grid. There is no blending limit to negotiate, no appliance to replace, no pipeline metallurgy to reassess.

That drop-in quality gives the biomethane market a cost advantage its competitors cannot match on infrastructure grounds. Hydrogen requires new pipelines or blending limits and new burners; electrification requires new equipment and grid reinforcement. Biomethane requires a digester, an upgrader, and a grid connection, after which the entire downstream chain already exists. For hard-to-abate uses, high-temperature industrial heat, heavy trucking, existing building stock, that is often the only realistic near-term decarbonization route.

This feedstock carries a second advantage. When producers make biomethane from livestock manure, the process captures methane that would otherwise vent from open storage into the atmosphere, where it is a far more potent greenhouse gas than CO2. The result is a fuel that can score negative lifecycle carbon intensity. That climate-positive profile is why manure-based projects command the strongest premiums in the biomethane market under transport fuel schemes.

How Biomethane Projects Actually Generate Revenue

A biomethane plant is a waste-processing business and an energy business at once, and returns in the biomethane market depend on stacking several revenue lines, because gas sales alone rarely pay.

Project economics typically rest on:

  • Gate fees for accepting industrial, municipal, or food-processing waste
  • The gas itself, sold at a premium to fossil natural gas or via grid injection
  • Carbon and renewable fuel credits, the largest single value driver in the biomethane market for negative-carbon-intensity manure projects
  • Guarantees of origin sold separately from the physical molecule
  • Biogenic CO2 co-product, saleable into food-grade and e-fuel markets
  • Digestate sold as fertilizer, closing the agricultural loop

This stacking is why the biomethane market can function despite production costs well above fossil gas: no single line covers the gap, but together they can. It also explains the market's policy sensitivity, removes the credits or the mandates and several of those revenue lines vanish at once, which is the central risk any investor in the biomethane market has to underwrite.

Global Biomethane Market Overview

The global biomethane market is forecast to reach approximately USD 12.0 billion by 2034, registering a CAGR of 6.2% during the forecast period.

Policy and energy security drive growth in the biomethane market far more than price:

  • REPowerEU's 35 bcm by 2030 target and RED III's binding renewable obligations
  • Energy security priorities favoring domestically produced gas since 2022
  • US Renewable Fuel Standard, state low-carbon fuel standards, and IRA incentives
  • Corporate decarbonization commitments creating voluntary demand above mandates

Because policy creates these drivers, the biomethane market grows in step with regulation rather than with cost curves, which makes it fast-moving where support is firm and stalled where it is uncertain.

Market Analysis by Feedstock

What goes into the digester determines both the economics and the carbon score, making feedstock the most consequential choice in the biomethane market.

Agricultural & Livestock Manure, the premium feedstock

Manure is the largest and most valuable feedstock in the biomethane market, because capturing methane from open storage yields negative lifecycle carbon intensity and premium credit value, while farm proximity keeps collection logistics economic and secures long-term supply for biomethane producers.

Industrial & Municipal Waste and Energy Crops

Industrial and municipal waste, including food processing residues, sewage sludge, and the organic fraction of municipal solid waste, benefits from gate fees that improve returns. Intermediate energy crops, grown between main harvests, provide consistent high-yield input without displacing food production, subject to RED III sustainability limits.

Market Analysis by Production Process

The global biomethane demand analysis by production process is done across anaerobic digestion and thermal gasification.

Anaerobic digestion accounts for effectively all commercial capacity in the biomethane market, being mature, modular, and bankable. Thermal gasification remains small but strategically important, converting woody biomass that digestion cannot process and unlocking feedstock beyond the wet-waste ceiling.

Market Analysis by End-Use

The global biomethane market spans four end-uses: transportation, industrial, building, and power generation.

Transportation leads the biomethane market by value, since renewable fuel mandates and strong lifecycle credits make bio-CNG and bio-LNG the best-paying destination per unit of energy, anchored by heavy-duty trucking where gas engines are proven and batteries remain difficult.

Industrial use is the fastest-growing end-use of the biomethane market as manufacturers decarbonize existing furnaces and boilers with a drop-in fuel. Buildings consume grid-injected volumes through existing networks and appliances, while power generation offers dispatchable renewable electricity complementing intermittent wind and solar.

Regional Market Insights

Europe dominates the biomethane market with roughly 60% of global value, underpinned by installed capacity of 8.2 bcm per year across some 1,975 plants. Germany operates the world's largest grid-injection network with more than 240 upgrading plants connected to the national grid, while France, Denmark, the UK, Italy, and the Netherlands drive growth and Ireland, Spain, and Poland scale from a low base.

The North American biomethane market is accelerating, with US renewable natural gas output around 136 PJ and growing rapidly since 2022 under the Renewable Fuel Standard, state low-carbon fuel standards, and Inflation Reduction Act incentives that reward negative-carbon-intensity manure projects.

Asia-Pacific, Central & South America, and the Middle East & Africa remain early-stage in the biomethane market but hold the largest untapped feedstock base, with India's biogas programmes and Brazil's sugarcane and livestock residues the most significant opportunities.

The 35 bcm Problem: A Target Four Times Today's Capacity

The central problem in the biomethane market is arithmetic. European installed capacity reached 8.2 bcm per year by the end of the second quarter of 2026, up 17% year on year, above 8 bcm for the first time, with plants rising from 1,678 to 1,975 as 327 new facilities came online. That is real, accelerating progress, but it still amounts to only about a quarter of the 35 bcm REPowerEU calls for by 2030.

The investment picture underlines the gap more than it closes it. Commitments across the biomethane market reached EUR 36 billion in 2026, up from EUR 28 billion a year earlier, and are projected to deliver about 9 bcm per year of additional European capacity by 2030. Even assuming developers deploy every euro on schedule, that points to roughly 17 bcm, around half the target. The IEA's own outlook, projecting 34% growth in combined biogas and biomethane between 2025 and 2030, points the same way, noting that Germany's output has been broadly flat since 2017 even as France, Italy, and Denmark expand quickly.

The constraints behind the gap are practical, not technical. Permitting is slow and fragmented across jurisdictions. Feedstock collection is logistically complex and increasingly contested between competing digesters. Grid connection costs and capacity limits restrict injection in several markets. And because biomethane costs a multiple of fossil gas, nearly every project depends on subsidy or credit regimes that can shift with a change of government. The biomethane market is thus caught between a mandate that assumes rapid scaling and a permitting, feedstock, and financing reality that delivers incremental growth, and how that tension resolves will determine whether the 2030 target is met, missed, or quietly revised.

Where the Industry Is Heading

The biomethane market is entering a phase where liquidity and feedstock breadth matter as much as new plants. The most consequential directions are:

  • Cross-border trade in biomethane and guarantees of origin to connect supply with premium demand
  • Thermal gasification unlocking woody biomass beyond the digestible-waste ceiling
  • Biogenic CO2 capture and sale into food-grade and e-fuel markets as a second revenue line
  • Standardised, faster permitting regimes to shorten project timelines
  • Expansion into India, Brazil, and other feedstock-rich emerging markets

These directions reward the biomethane market participants who can secure feedstock, navigate permitting, and monetise every revenue line instead of leaning on the gas price alone.

Competitive Landscape

The biomethane market is fragmented at the plant level but increasingly consolidated at the offtake and trading level, as energy majors and industrial gas companies acquire developers and aggregate volumes.

Leading participants in the global biomethane market include Air Liquide, TotalEnergies, ENGIE, Gasum, BP, Shell, Verbio, and EnviTec Biogas.

Competition across the biomethane market turns on feedstock access, project pipeline, and the ability to aggregate and certify volumes for industrial and transport buyers. Energy majors have moved to secure supply and build refuelling networks, industrial gas companies bring upgrading technology and CO2 monetisation, and specialist developers such as Verbio and EnviTec Biogas hold deep agricultural feedstock relationships, the asset that ultimately constrains how fast anyone can grow.

What This Means for Developers, Buyers, and Investors

The biomethane market offers a proven, drop-in renewable fuel that runs on infrastructure already paid for and can even be climate-positive when made from manure. What it does not yet offer is scale to match the targets set for it, and that mismatch holds both the risk and the opportunity.

For developers, buyers, and investors, the questions that matter across the biomethane market are no longer about whether the technology works, but about which permitting regimes will actually allow build-out, who has locked up feedstock, how durable the credit and mandate regimes are, and whether cross-border trade can develop fast enough to connect cheap supply with premium demand.
