Report Description
Ethylene carbonate is an organic compound, which is colourless and odourless solid at room temperature but becomes a low-viscous liquid when heated above its melting point. It serves as a highly polar solvent in various applications such as in lithium-ion batteries, lubricants, and in the production of plastics and pharmaceuticals. Ethylene carbonate is commonly manufactured through a catalytic reaction between ethylene oxide and carbon dioxide under high temperature and pressure. At the end ethylene carbonate is purified and separated from other impurities produced as byproducts during reaction. Another common method used is though transesterification process of urea and ethylene glycol.

Ethylene Carbonate Demand, by Application
In terms of global ethylene carbonate demand, by application the market is segmented into, lithium batteries, lubricants, paints & coatings, chemical intermediates and others. In this segment, lithium batteries account for majority shares in the ethylene carbonate market. They are key driver of the market, as ethylene carbonate effectively dissolves lithium salts, which is necessary to create conductive electrolyte solution and it also helps in forming a protective Solid Electrolyte Interphase, which is crucial for battery’s performance.
Lubricants and paints & coatings segment in ethylene carbonate market is also witnessing growth, mainly due to its ability to improve their performance like, film formation, durability, thermal stability and slipperiness. It forms a protective layer on metal surface, thus reducing friction and wear between moving parts. In chemical intermediate applications, ethylene carbonate acts as a precursor in the production of ethylene glycol, DMC and vinylene carbonate.

Ethylene carbonate demand, by region
As of 2025, Asia Pacific region dominated the global ethylene carbonate market, with China being the major contributor in the region, mainly due to the country’s government policies and huge industrial base. The demand in this region was mainly due to huge presence of battery manufacturing plants, electronics and automotive industries. China remains the world’s largest electric car manufacturing hub accounting for more than 70% of global production. The ethylene carbonate demand growth in Asia Pacific is also attributed to the enhanced policies and initiatives for energy storage systems (ESS), long-duration energy storage (LDES), and battery energy storage systems (BESS).
Heavy investments are being witnessed in North America and Western Europe region by lithium battery producers, which is expected to aid the market growth in these regions. Initiatives by government such as, the United States initiative to convert most of the vehicles into electric vehicles by 2030 to reduce emissions, may help in increasing the market for ethylene carbonate in these regions.
