Report Description
Introduction
The global hydrogen fluoride demand stood at around 2372 kilo tons in 2024 most of the demand driven by its usage as a refrigerant, etching agent, pharmaceuticals, etc. Hydrogen fluoride is a transparent, corrosive, and fuming liquid/gas, that has a strong, pungent smell and is supplied in cylinders as a liquefied gas. When covered in water, hydrofluoric acid solutions are formed which are used in a variety of industrial applications, including fluorocarbons refining, aluminium metal, and conversion to high-octane gasoline. Hydrogen fluoride commonly used in the manufacture of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), which are used in refrigerators and air conditioners and are not ozone-depleting. They are also used in oil fields, for petroleum alkylation and is a key raw material for manufacturing aluminium fluoride which is majorly used for the automotive industry.
Hydrogen Fluoride Supply Analysis
China is the largest exporter of hydrogen fluoride with 255 kilo tons exports recorded in 2024. The country is the largest manufacturer of hydrogen fluoride with over 35 plants present in the country. China exported 86 kilo tons to South Korea, 66 kilo tons to Japan and over 40 kilo tons to Thailand. Germany stands as the second largest exporter of hydrogen fluoride with 32 kilo tons exports in 2024, supplying to France, Netherlands, Norway and the United Kingdom.
South Korea is the largest importer with 113 kilo tons in 2024, followed by USA, Japan, Taiwan and France with 69 kilo tons, 68 kilo tons, 49 kilo tons and 26 kilo tons imports respectively.
The global hydrogen fluoride capacity stood at around 2900 kilo tons in 2024. Honeywell, Solvay, Mexichem, YingPeng Chemicals, Do-Fluoride Chemicals, DuPont, Arkema, Sinochem Lantian, Zhejiang Juhua Group, Stella Chemifa and Other Manufacturers are some of the hydrogen fluoride manufacturers. Asia Pacific leads the world capacity with a market share of 65% followed by North America (14%) and Western Europe (11%). In Asia Pacific, China dominates the hydrogen fluoride market with a market share of over 80%.
Hydrogen Fluoride Demand, by Type
Hydrogen fluoride market is segmented by type which include gas and liquid. Hydrogen fluoride gas is the most common type supplied in a compressed gas form in steel cylinders. HF is a critical industrial raw material, used as a precursor to many commercial fluorinated compounds and as a strong industrial catalyst. Liquid hydrogen fluoride is used where high concentrations and large-scale processing are required, such as in the production of aluminium fluoride, uranium hexafluoride, and fluorosilicic acid. The choice between gas and liquid HF depends on end-use requirements, safety considerations, and storage infrastructure.
Hydrogen Fluoride Demand, by Application
Hydrogen fluoride applications are segmented into chemical manufacturing, petrochemicals and others. Hydrogen fluoride is used for the synthesis of chemicals, mainly fluorine-based chemicals, including refrigerants (hydrofluorocarbons), pharmaceuticals, and fluoroplastics, e.g., Teflon. Teflon is used in numerous applications due to its nonstick and low friction properties such as cookware, waterproof clothing and paints & coatings.
Hydrogen fluoride can also be used in other industries such as glass etching and metals processing (aluminium). Hydrogen fluoride is used to remove stubborn mineral deposits, rust, and scales from metal surfaces, in the petrochemical and metalworking industries. It can effectively dissolve calcium and magnesium deposits, leaving metal surfaces free from corrosion.
In the semiconductor industry, hydrogen fluoride is used to clean and etch silicon wafers where it can remove contaminants and thin layers of silicon dioxide from the wafers, which is an important step in semiconductor fabrication.
Hydrogen Fluoride Demand, by Region
Asia Pacific dominates the global hydrogen fluoride market, by holding the largest market share owith China leading followed by Japan, South Korea and India.
Rapid industrialization, strong electronics and semiconductors industry, abundant availability of raw materials, and lower manufacturing costs are the main demand drivers in the hydrogen fluoride market in the region. China is the primary consumer and the largest producer of hydrogen fluoride in the region, due to its massive fluorochemicals, electronics and steel industries. India and Vietnam are experiencing fast growth in demand, driven by expanding industrial applications, automotive and semiconductor manufacturing.
Market Dynamics
Market Driver: Rising Demand from the End-Use Industries
A primary factor driving the hydrogen fluoride industry is the growing use of hydrogen fluoride as fluorochemicals, such as in refrigerants. More than 60% of hydrogen fluoride is used in the manufacture of refrigerants. Refrigerants are used in refrigeration and air conditioning systems to transfer heat and provide cooling. They play an important role in the refrigeration cycle by absorbing heat from the surroundings and releasing it elsewhere, allowing for the removal of heat from a particular space.
High-purity HF for semiconductors and battery production are also the important drivers of the hydrogen fluoride market growth. Liquid HF is used in the etching of the semiconductors and gaseous hydrogen fluoride is used in the cleaning operations of semiconductors. Trends such as remote working, artificial intelligence, and rising demand for electric vehicles are boosting the demand for semiconductors. The rising demand for semiconductors in various end use industries will boost the hydrogen fluoride market in the forecast period.
Market Restraint: Strict Regulations on Fluorocarbon Refrigerants
Strict regulations on fluorocarbon refrigerants are driven by their high global warming potential and historical role in ozone depletion. Fluorocarbon refrigerants are potent greenhouse gases that contribute to global warming and refrigerants, such as CFCs, were banned because they depleted the ozone layer. While newer HFCs don't harm the ozone layer, they are still a significant contributor to climate change. Key regulations at the international, EU, and US levels mandate a phase-down of hydrofluorocarbons and chlorofluorocarbons and hydrochlorofluorocarbons which can hinder the hydrogen fluoride market growth in the forecast period.
